Calvin and Sassa // Japan

This is a dear one to me. Last summer, the whole Bulthuis clan packed up many, many bags and headed off to Japan for an adventure that involved a lot of train time (which I love), a lot of ramen (which I love), and a wedding (which I love the most). Brother-in-law Calvin brought our sweet new sister-in-law Sassa into the family and we couldn’t be more excited about it. She is the best and with her, the international net of this family widens. Being so far away for much of the planning, there was only so much we could do – so it was such an honor when they asked if I could take pictures at their wedding. A friend of theirs was in charge of the actual ceremony so I got to enjoy that part of it as a sibling – and I got to take their portraits and play second photographer during the festivities. One of my favorite parts of the photography segment of the day was hanging out with Sassa in the beauty salon as she got ready. I met members of her wonderful family (we did a lot of smiling and nodding at each other), sipped on calpis water, and took pictures of our gorgeous bride as she calmly prepped. Oh yes and also fell in love with her grandma who I want to adopt as my own. Here are some outtakes from their beautiful day!

    Melissa

This lovely individual called me up to take some headshots for her new real estate website and we had a blast walking around Volunteer park and taking in the sun. It was a freezing day (but actually) so many much time was spent in the conservatory because a. it is a million degrees in there and b. there are a million succulents in there and those two things are some of the best things this life has to offer. Melissa was very patient and sweet and I can tell you right now she is going to be a fantastic realtor (with the most amazing blue eyes you’ve ever seen, yes?).

      Sanath and Ramya

I have yet to meet an engagement session I didn’t like. Two people who like each other a whole lot letting me take love-filled pictures is a sure win. And sometimes those two people happen to come from your corner of the globe and miss things like roti and warm weather, and you chat like you’ve known each other for years, and the whole thing seems like you’re hanging out with long lost friends except you sometimes order them to stand in well-lit shrubbery and stare each other awkward amounts of time. That was my time with Sanath and Ramya. They hail from India, know where Sri Lanka is, and are just the warmest, most comfortable people to be around. Thank you for picking me you guys, it was such a delight!
